As the Disneyland Resort continues celebrating its 60th anniversary, big changes are on the horizon - namely, the new Star Wars Land.
While groundbreaking will take place in early 2016, the land will not be competed for a few years. However, in the meantime, Season of the Force takes over Tomorrowland with Star Wars-themed rides, encounters and dining. It opens a month before the upcoming film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, scheduled to premier Dec. 18, 2015.
I recently attended the private opening of Season of the Force, which took place the day before the annual Holidays at Disneyland seasonal event, which runs from Nov. 13 - Jan 6. Season of the Force kicks off to the public on Nov. 16. Here are some of the highlights happening at the Disneyland Resort.
Tomorrowland has been invaded by Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Storm Troopers and other Star Wars characters. The first thing to see (especially if you're not very familiar with the Star Wars stories) is Star Wars: Path of the Jedi in the Tomorrowland Theater. The 10-minute video connects iconic scenes with Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars films and includes moments from the new movie.
In the heart of Tomorrowland is Star Wars Launch Bay, a multi-sensory space featuring all things Star Wars. See authentic replicas of Star Wars props, play the latest Star Wars video games and come face-to-face with Darth Vader or Chewbacca.
The classic Space Mountain has been redesigned temporarily as Hyperspace Mountain, featuring an action-packed battle between Rebel X wings and Imperial TIE fighters. Be sure to get your FastPass early in the day for this popular ride.
Star Tours - The Adventure Continues includes new characters in the journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
In Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple opening Dec. 8, the interactive show spotlights Darth Vader and the Seventh Sister Inquisitor, a new villain from the popular Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels.
Even the restaurants in Tomorrowland Terrace have been taken over by The Force. You can choose from dark and light side menus, such as the First Order Specialty Burger, made of a patty of angus beef and chorizo topped with fried cherry peppers and spicy lime aioli served on a dark bun. The tasty burger has a kick to it!
While Season of the Force may steal the show, there's no denying that Christmas time at the Disneyland Resort is spectacular. Holiday decor and attractions combined with ongoing 60th anniversary celebrations make this a festive time of year to visit Mickey and the gang. It's a Small World Holiday and Haunted Holiday Mansion are back along with Diamond Celebration's Paint the Night Parade and Disneyland Forever fireworks.
